It got so cold… | The Survival Gardener

We’re almost past the big freeze now and are starting to see the damage.
The uncovered radishes look like they’re totally destroyed, as are the kohlrabi I transplanted.
The wheat is fine, but most of the over-planted pasture looks like it’s toast. Almost no green left out there after all that time below freezing.
We had a lot of coffee plants and other tropicals on our closed-in porch, then I discovered that some of the pots near the edge of the room were starting to freeze, so we moved them all into the house. Looks like we lost some plants, though, including my only Cattley Guava.
It was startling how cold it got.
I talked to a local man and he told me it never – never – gets this cold for this long. This was truly a freak event.
I have a feeling it may even have killed the plants on my front porch, flat against the south-facing wall. That might be it for my Okinawa spinach, pineapples and other tropical herbs. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
Tomorrow I’ll uncover some of the Satsumas and see if they managed to live in their sheet cocoons with barrels of water.
Come on, Greta… you’re such a disappointment. It was supposed to be getting warmer!
Looks like I may have to find hay for the cows now.
