Duchess of Devonshire’s Aquamarine Brooch

Duchess of Devonshire’s Aquamarine Brooch

Following their acquisition of Queen Marie-Amélie’s Pearl Earrings, we can reveal that the magnificent Aquamarine and Diamond Brooch of the legendary Deborah Mitford, Duchess of Devonshire auctioned at Bonhams in 2021 and is now offered at M.S. Rau of New Orleans!

A large oval-cut aquamarine, set horizontally within a delicate border of old brilliant and single-cut diamonds, suspending a large aquamarine detachable drop with millegrain-set rose-cut diamond cap, circa 1905, in fitted case by Harvey & Gore, 4 Burlington Gardens, London, with cream silk ruched interior.

Delicate old European cut, rose cut and single cut diamonds frame the composition, enhancing the aquamarines’ remarkable color and brilliance. Preserved in its original fitted case from Harvey & Gore, this brooch represents the height of Belle Époque elegance and craftsmanship. Set in platinum.

There are several massive Aquamarine and Diamond Brooches of similar design, one of which is in the Wartski collection and another which was made for Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire acquired several antique and modern jewels over the years, which is likely how this Brooch entered the Devonshire collection.

The Duchess of Devonshire notably wore this Aquamarine Brooch in a photograph with Cecil Beaton, at the ‘White Ball’ held by Prince and Princess Rupert Loewenstein at their home in Holland Park in London in 1969.

At some point, the Duchess gave the Aquamarine Brooch as a gift to a friend who put the Brooch up for auction at Bonhams in London in September 2021, where it sold for £94,000, much over the estimate of £25,000 – £35,000.

Now, five years later, the Duchess of Devonshire’s Aquamarine and Diamond Brooch is offered by M.S. Rau of New Orleans, who have also acquired Queen Marie-Amélie’s Pearl Earrings. The Brooch is priced at $348,500.

Some of the world’s finest jewels are distinguished by extraordinary gemstones, exceptional craftsmanship or noble provenance. This remarkable Belle Époque brooch possesses all three. Created circa 1905, the jewel was owned by the Duchess of Devonshire and centers a magnificent oval cut aquamarine weighing approximately 100.00 carats, accompanied by a perfectly matched detachable pear shaped aquamarine weighing approximately 80.00 carats. Together totaling approximately 180.00 carats, these remarkable gems display exceptional clarity and the highly coveted Santa Maria blue hue.

Published in her autobiography, the image immortalized the jewel within one of the most glamorous social circles of its era. Combining exceptional gemstones, period craftsmanship and distinguished provenance, this treasure is a rare survivor from the golden age of aristocratic society.
