‘Fed up:’ Random shooting in north Fort Worth neighborhood angers residents

A shooting in a far north Fort Worth neighborhood Friday morning ended with the detention of several people and damage to at least one resident’s vehicle, police said.

Officers responded to a shots fired call in the 900 block of Rio Bravo Drive, in Sendera Ranch, at around 8:30 a.m. Friday, according to online call records. Based on details given by callers and witnesses, police said they were able to locate the suspects’ vehicle and detain the occupants.

Gun violence detectives are conducting a full investigation, police said. According to online jail records, three suspects were arrested and face charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon: 18-year-old Damoni Butler, 20-year-old Davirion Sams, and 21-year-old Walter Frazier.

A resident in the area told the Star-Telegram she was awakened by her dog and heard the last two gunshots. The resident, who asked not to be identified, said that crime and other types of violence in the area have become increasingly common since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Any shootings anywhere are alarming, but that’s when we get out and walk our babies in the morning before it gets too hot,” the resident said. “What if this had happened when school is going on?”

The woman said another homeowner in the area wrote on Facebook that three of the gunshots struck his car and home, which had two young children inside. Three years ago, another neighbor’s car had Molotov cocktails thrown at it in the middle of the street, the resident said.

“It’s something every weekend,” the resident said. “Somebody’s cars are being gotten into … last month, there were younger kids jumping fences and a homeowner caught one with a gun in his hand on the backyard security cameras.”

Because the neighborhood is in far north Fort Worth, near Haslet, the resident said it can take Fort Worth police up to 20 minutes to respond to calls for service.

“The homeowners are fed up,” the resident said. “This is not a once-in-a-blue-moon occasion.”
