Brush fire breaks out at former San Francisco Navy shipyard

A brush fire broke out on Thursday afternoon at Hunters Point in San Francisco, sending large clouds of smoke into the sky. 

Multiple 911 callers reported the thick smoke just before 1:30 p.m., Lt. Mariano Elias, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, told SFGATE, which turned out to be a vegetation fire at the corner of Quesada Avenue and Fitch Street in the far southeastern part of the city. 

The fire, which occurred in the area of the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, is not threatening any structures, and no one was injured, Elias said. As of 2:15 p.m., there were two fire engines on the scene and “enough resources” to extinguish the fire, he said. 

Elias did not have information about the fire’s acreage or exact containment, but photos posted to Watch Duty show the large plume of smoke visible from miles away. 

Hunters Point is one of the areas of San Francisco that is more prone to brush fires because there is more sun in the region. The sun dries out the grass, which is also “not maintained” and often overgrows, Elias said.
