Amex to Discontinue the Old Blue Cash Card

American Express is discontinuing the Old Blue Cash card. This is a card that has not been available for new applications in years, but has surprisingly stuck around for longer than I expected.

This is a valuable card for those who have it. For your first $6,500 in purchases in a reward year, you will receive 1% on Everyday Purchases, and 0.5% on other purchases. But after your first $6,500 in purchases, you receive 5% on Everyday Purchases up to $50,000 and 1% on other purchases. Everyday Purchases include supermarkets, U.S. gas stations and select U.S. drugstores.

This is the notice that you will find in the most recent monthly statement:

Notice of Important Changes to Your Card Account

We are discontinuing the Blue Cash Card. As a result, your Card will be changed automatically on March 4, 2027, to the Blue Cash Everyday® Card and we will be making changes to your American Express Card Member Agreement (Agreement) as referenced in this notice. We encourage you to read this notice, share it with Additional Card Members on your account, and file it for future reference.

You will receive your new Card within 30 days after your account is changed to the Blue Cash Everyday Card. You may continue to use your existing Card until your new Card arrives.

Your New Card

As you can see, the Old Blue Cash will be converted to the no-fee Blue Cash Everyday Card. Your account number, payment terms and payment due date will remain the same. You can continue to redeem Reward Dollars for a statement credit with no minimum redemption amount at a value of 1:1.

Once your Card is changed to the Blue Cash Everyday Card, you will earn a reward of:

  • 3% on U.S. supermarkets purchases up to $6,000 per calendar year, then 1 percent thereafter (excludes superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs, and meal-kit delivery services);
  • 3% on U.S. online retail purchases up to $6,000 per calendar year, then 1 percent thereafter (excludes purchases made at restaurants, supermarkets, gasoline stations, or automotive dealers, as well as purchases of travel, entertainment, or other services);
  • 3% on gasoline purchases at U.S. gas stations up to $6,000 per calendar year, then 1 percent thereafter (excludes superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline);
  • 1% on all other eligible purchases.

Guru’s Wrap-up

This is my first ever credit card and I only found out how valuable it was many years later. It’s sad to see it discontinued, but it lasted way longer than I expected.

But at least American Express is giving us enough time to get more spending done. You can continue earning the current rates until March 4, 2027.
