ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) — An 8-year-old girl and an “elderly woman” died Saturday morning during a fire that charred a home in Orange, New Jersey.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office did not have the age of the woman, and their identities were not released.
Eyewitness News spoke with neighbors of the Park Place who said the blaze started around 8:30 a.m. They said they attempted to get inside the house because they heard people were trapped inside – but there was too much smoke.
A video obtained by Eyewitness News showed black smoke billowing above the home that could be seen from miles around.
A large emergency response decended upon a home Saturday morning in Orange.
It was not immediately clear how the fire started.
The Red Cross said at least 20 residents were displaced.
“Volunteers will provide emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food, clothing, and other immediate needs. Red Cross Disaster Health, Disaster Mental Health, and Spiritual Care Services are also available to the families,” the Red Cross said in a statement.
