POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Lakeland will hold its Red White and Kaboom event on Friday along Lake Mirror, bringing the community together for Fourth of July celebrations a day early.
The annual event has been hosted since 2009 and includes performances by the ‘Sing out crew’ and a lLkeland based band, known as ‘Bully for You.’ There will also be new food vendors and a fireworks show.
Organizers say holding the celebration on July 3 allows the community to gather before spending Independence Day with family. Performances are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Fireworks are set for 9 p.m.
Jamin Smith, digital content creator for the City of Lakeland, said attendees should arrive early to find a spot.
“I would say over the years we’ve actually seen upwards of 50,000 attendees for this event and so every year its growing bigger and bigger and bigger, and this year we’re super excited because all the stars are aligned for it to be a great event,” Smith said.
City leaders said parking can be tricky, but all parking garages will be open and available for the event.
Attendees are also encouraged to prepare for the heat. Smith said people may bring their own coolers, but glass containers are not allowed.
Large beach umbrellas and tents are not allowed and they are asking that no glass containers be brought to the area either.
“We’re asking that you only bring personal umbrellas and not the huge beach umbrellas or huge tents, just so everyone can enjoy the event equally,” Smith said.
Lakeland police are also urging people to be mindful of the heat. The reminder comes after a Sun ’n Fun event earlier this year resulted in dozens of heat-related calls.
During the event, the city will also collect non-perishable food items to support the nonprofit Volunteers in Service for the Elderly, they’re hoping people can show their support for the non-profit while coming out to have some fun.
