FIFA extends Bafana star Themba Zwane’s World Cup ban

South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has received a three-match suspension from FIFA.

The punishment follows his red card against Mexico in Bafana Bafana’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match.

Officials dismissed Zwane late in the 2-0 loss.

They ruled that he struck Mexico defender Roberto Alvarado in the face.

Initially, the red card carried an automatic one-match suspension.

However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and imposed a harsher penalty.

Midfielder Set to Miss Remaining Group Matches

As a result, the 36-year-old will miss South Africa’s remaining Group A fixtures.

These matches include the crucial encounter against the Czech Republic.

However, the suspension could be overturned through a successful appeal.

FIFA explained that red cards usually lead to a one-match ban.

Nevertheless, the governing body can increase sanctions for foul play or violent conduct.
