Prince George’s County schools extend year to June 18 due to snowstorm closures

After a severe snowstorm, Prince George’s County schools face an extended year to meet Maryland’s 180-day requirement, using make-up days and seeking state waivers.

WASHINGTON — With last week’s snowstorm, schools across the area were closed for days, for some a whole week. In Prince George’s County, kids were out of school for seven days, plus an additional day back in December. So kids will need to make up eight days.

In the state of Maryland, kids are required to attend 180 days of instructional learning days. To meet these requirements, the county is adjusting its school year calendar using all the built-in make-up days.

Presidents’ Day was considered a make-up day as well, but officials decided schools and offices would remain closed on February 16. Instead, officials decided to add a day at the end of the school year, June 18.

The county also plans to ask the state for a waiver for the remaining days. However, if the waiver isn’t granted, school board officials will consider April 6 as one of the make-up days.
