As South Florida prepares for temperatures to plunge to the low and mid-20s overnight Sunday, one of the most at-risk communities — homeless individuals — were given a helping hand Saturday in downtown Miami.

FPL and the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust partnered to provide gloves, coats, blankets, hand warmers and sleeping bags to people in need at the Stephen P. Clark Center.

“This is our fourth cold weather outreach event this year with the Homeless Trust, and we do it any time the temperatures are under 50 degrees,” said Lisa Mozloom, a spokesperson for the event.

Zondre Colson, from Liberty City, has lived on the streets for about two years and gone through several cold weather nights, he told the Miami Herald.

Colson usually looks for abandoned buildings during those times, but he was appreciative that shelters would be available this weekend.

As part of the Homeless Trust’s Cold Weather Emergency Plan, supplies will be passed out throughout the county and people will be offered and placed into shelters. As of Saturday afternoon, about 300 people had been placed into a shelter since Friday.
