Amazon is closing all Northern California Amazon Fresh stores.
ELK GROVE, Calif. — Less than two years after the first Amazon Fresh opened in Northern California, Amazon has announced that all of those stores will close.
The company announced the move Tuesday, saying Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go brick-and-mortar stores have not met the business model it needs to expand nationwide.
Some of the Fresh and Go stores will be converted into Whole Foods locations, according to the company. Amazon said Tuesday it plans to open more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years.
The following locations near Sacramento are set to close. It’s not clear when exactly the stores will close.
Citrus Heights: 5425 Sunrise Blvd, Citrus Heights, CA 95610
Elk Grove: 7530 Elk Grove Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95757
Roseville: 6780 Stanford Ranch Road, Roseville, CA 95678
ABC10 reached out to the developer of the Ridge shopping center in Elk Grove, where the city’s Amazon Fresh is located, but they said they had no comment at this time.
Elk Grove’s Economic Development Director, Darrel Doan, provided the following comment:
“We are disappointed that Amazon Fresh is closing its Northern California stores. While this decision is unfortunate, it appears to be a national corporate decision and not the result of local conditions.
We remain excited about the upcoming opening of Amazon’s Whole Foods at The Village in Elk Grove and are committed to working with the owners of The Ridge to identify new tenants for the space.”
