Jefferson High School Gains New Boundaries, Moves To Single Enrollment Institution – KXL

There is a more than 400-million dollar project that Jefferson High School is taking on to transform itself into a singular student enrollment institution. Jefferson High School has had low attendance for years, partly due to what Portland Public Schools calls dual assignment, allowing students in that area to also have three other choices based on their address.

Last night, PPS members adopted two resolutions, ending student choice and designating Jefferson as a comprehensive high school through boundary changes.

“(This) demonstrates our commitment to providing students well resourced learning environments close to where they live (as well as) return Jefferson to a vibrant neighborhood school,” Portland Public Schools superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong said.

“This recommendation provides long-term stability for students across North (and) Northeast Portland, access to comparable programing, and enrollment clarity,”  PPS assistant superintendent of school improvement and modernization Margaret Calvert said.

The boundary changes also affect Roosevelt, McDaniel, and Grant High Schools as well as feeder schools. The changes take effect in the 2027-28 school year.
