The Spanish Royal Family celebrated the Christening of Infanta Leonor de Todos los Santos de Borbón y Ortiz, now the Princess of Asturias, at the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid on this day in 2006, 20 years ago!
Infanta Leonor de Todos los Santos de Borbón y Ortiz, the elder daughter of the then Prince and Princess of Asturias, was baptised by the Archbishop of Madrid in the Font of Santo Domingo de Guzmán using water from the River Jordan at the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid.
Leonor left the Ruber International Hospital with her parents on 7 November 2005. She was baptised in the Zarzuela Palace by the archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela, on 14 January 2006. Like her father, Leonor was baptised – with water from the Jordan River – in a Romanesque baptismal font that has been used to christen Spanish princes since the 17th century.
Infanta Leonor’s godparents are her paternal grandparents, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain.
