The driver is not, however, facing any charges specifically for the death caused by the crash.
ASHBURN, Va. — A 63-year-old bus driver is facing criminal charges for a crash that killed a pedestrian last month, but not for her death.
Feseha Glmariam Ambaye, a Fairfax resident, was driving a Loudoun County transit bus around 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 when he crashed into a pedestrian near the intersection of Croson Lane and Moorsefield Boulevard. The pedestrian, later identified as Alyssa Kakol of Purcellville, died from her injuries at a nearby hospital.
Ambaye was charged Wednesday with failure to yield to a pedestrian, which is a class 1 misdemeanor. He is not, however, facing any charges specifically for Kakol’s death.
The driver works for a contractor that operates Loudoun County’s bus service called Keolis Transit Services, LLC, the sheriff’s department said. He was released on a summons.
Kakol was a teacher at the Gardener School of Herndon. The school sent the following statement to WUSA9 on Dec. 2:
“It is with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Ms. Alyssa Kakol from The Gardner School of Herndon. Ms. Kakol was deeply loved by her students, their families, and our staff. Her warmth, joy, and commitment to children made a lasting impact on our school community, and she will be profoundly missed.
We are in close contact with her family during this difficult time, and we are providing the appropriate resources and support to both our staff and families as they process this loss. We recognize that many may be navigating difficult emotions, and we remain committed to the well-being of our entire community.
We have also prepared developmentally appropriate guidance to help families talk with young children about loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ms. Kakol’s family and thank all who are keeping her and our school community in their thoughts.”
