After less than 2 years, Dr. David Ferguson will resign as principal of Fauquier High School on January 27.

WASHINGTON — After less than two years, Dr. David Ferguson will be stepping down as principal of Fauquier County Public Schools.

In a letter sent to parents and guardians, Ferguson said he will be resigning effective January 27. The letter thanked parents, guardians, students, and staff for his time as principal.

Ferguson’s reason for stepping down was not made public at this time. But, according to Fauquier Times, the Fauquier County Public Schools superintendent was notified during spring break that Ferguson was “finalizing a potential advancement opportunity.”

“I am also proud of the progress made to improve our facilities and overall school environment, including continued campus improvements and the exciting addition of the new turf field currently under construction. I extend my sincere appreciation to Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Dores, Ms. Carter, Mr. Mills, and the Fauquier County maintenance staff for their tireless work outside and behind the scenes. I am equally grateful to our cafeteria staff for the care and consistency they provide our students each day, and to our bus drivers who ensure our students arrive at school safely and ready to learn,” Ferguson said in his letter.

He was appointed principal following the sudden death of former principal, Kraig Kelican, in 2024 after a six-month search. Prior to his current role, Ferguson was the principal at Rappahannock High School.

“Finally, thank you to our students, who are the heart of Fauquier High School. You are the reason this work matters, and you make each day meaningful and rewarding. I look forward to watching your continued growth and celebrating your future successes,” Ferguson’s letter read. “Please know that our students and staff remain my top priority through the remainder of my time at Fauquier High School. I am committed to ensuring a smooth and thoughtful transition and to supporting the school community in every way possible during this period.”
