Live updates: Deposed Venezuelan president Maduro set to make court appearance in NYC

What to Know

• Deposed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is set to make the first court appearance since his stunning capture Monday at noon in a lower Manhattan courtroom.
• Maduro and his wife, first lady Cilia Flores, have been indicted in the U.S. for alleged narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy and weapons offenses.
• Since arriving the U.S. on Saturday night, Maduro has been held at the infamous Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where Jeffrey Epstein died and Sean “Diddy” Combs was held for a little more than a year before he was sentenced to over four years in federal prison in October.
• Protesters gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center to decry U.S. intervention in Venezuela. Meanwhile, in South Florida over the wekend, Venezuelans celebrated Maduro’s capture by American forces.
• The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at 10 a.m. In a statement Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that he was “deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela,” and that the United States’ actions “constitute a dangerous precedent.”
• Edmundo González, whom the U.S. and other governments recognized as the winner of Venezuela’s 2024 contested presidential election, referred to himself as “president” of the country in a video on social media Sunday and asked the army to recognize him as commander in chief.
• Interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s vice president under Maduro, is set to be sworn in as president Monday.
