The U.S. has seen 10 lottery jackpot prizes exceed $1.1 billion since 2016.
WASHINGTON — A single ticket from Arkansas won the $1.817 billion Powerball jackpot on Christmas Eve.
The ticket marked the second time ever that a Powerball jackpot was won in the state. The first time was in 2010.
“Congratulations to the newest Powerball jackpot winner! This is truly an extraordinary, life-changing prize,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO. “We also want to thank all the players who joined in this jackpot streak – every ticket purchased helps support public programs and services across the country.”
The Powerball had 47 consecutive drawings without a winner, stretching three months of buildup. The last time the Powerball jackpot was won was on Sept. 6 by two tickets in Missouri and Texas that split a $1.787 billion prize.
The last time someone won a Powerball jackpot on Christmas Eve was in 2011. The lottery game also added that the sweepstakes has also been won on Christmas Day four times, most recently in 2013.
