A boy, 17, and his father, 43, were allegedly shot and killed by a 39-year-old man who faces murder and assault weapon transportation charges, authorities said.

LASSEN COUNTY, Calif. — A father and son have been identified as the two killed in a California shooting earlier this month near the Nevada state line.

Spencer Browne, 17, and Richard Browne, 43, both of Reno, died after the shooting Dec. 6 on Highway 395, about two miles west of the California-Nevada border, according to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. Their cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.

Isacc Anthony Pedroza, 39, of Reno, was accused of murdering both Brownes, and a criminal complaint filed against him also alleges a transportation of an assault weapon charge and a personal discharge of a firearm enhancement, according to a news release from the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office.

Pedroza has pleaded not guilty, the DA’s office said. He is expected to appear in court Dec. 17.

What do authorities say happened?

Multiple people occupying two separate vehicles, all from Reno, were involved in the Dec. 6 shooting about 20 miles northwest of Reno, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both vehicles pulled to the right shoulder, where a confrontation allegedly occurred. It escalated into a shooting as a CHP officer conducting patrol in the area arrived on scene, per law enforcement.

The officer detained all individuals and provided medical aid to those hurt, the CHP said.

Both Brownes died at the scene despite life-saving efforts, authorities said.

The shooting was not a road rage incident, it was not gang-related nor did an officer-involved shooting occur, the DA’s office said.

Officials said anyone with information on the shooting is encouraged to contact CHP’s Quincy office at 530-283-1100.

According to a verified Go Fund Me created Dec. 10 by Spencer Browne’s mother to help with funeral expenses, her family is facing “unimaginable grief and shock.”

“My children have lost both their father and brother, and I am struggling to find the strength to guide us through this devastating loss,” she wrote in the fundraiser.
