The best gourmand perfumes have grown up since the early aughts, abandoning a predilection for manufactured saccharinity and juvenile tendencies for more intricate, elegant profiles. It’s not to say that beloved notes are passé (hardly the case; vanilla will always remain center stage) but rather, olfactive notes are now layered with the unexpected. Fruity perfumes, for example—once treacly with department-store fluorescence—are given creamy or earthy undertones for depth. Newer accords are on the rise, too: Nutty, lactonic, and caramel fragrances have surfaced not only to delight but also to serve as modern-day aphrodisiacs. Desserts have been subverted to infuse comfort with complexity—thereby making a pastry-inspired perfume less literal, and infinitely more wearable.
The edible has been elevated, and the nostalgic reimagined. These are category-defining gourmands that satisfy the pleasure principle, and would do well as your next signature scent for weekends, cozy nights in, and date nights out.
