‘Not lawful’: Bay Area congressmember slams Trump White House AI order

(KRON) — A Trump White House executive order aimed at preventing the regulation of artificial intelligence at the state level is being slammed by Bay Area elected officials. The order, which was signed by President Donald Trump on Thursday, seeks to impose a national AI standard, limiting states’ efforts to enact their own AI laws.

“We have to be unified. China is unified because they have one vote and that’s President Xi [Xinping],” Trump said, in Oval Office remarks reported by The Hill. “We have a different system, but we have a system that’s good. But we only have a system that’s good if it’s smart.”

Bay Area Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA-16) slammed the order as unlawful.

“This executive order is not lawful,” said Lofgren in a statement. “If the president really wants to address contradictory state laws, he can work with Congress on both sides of the aisle to debate and pass a federal standard. Unfortunately, the Republicans in Congress and the White House have been missing in action on creating AI legislation in Congress.”

“I call on Speaker Johnson to make Congress relevant again and engage in bipartisan conversation on AI governance,” she added.
