Raleigh police identify man killed in I-440 crash, one man charged

One man is dead and another arrested after a crash along Interstate 440 on Saturday morning.

Raleigh police arrested 28-year-old Tyree McKinnie. Police said officers were called to reports of a crash around 6:55 a.m. at the Atlantic Avenue bridge.

When they arrived, officers said they found a Toyota Rav4 against the median barrier wall. Police said the driver, 55-year-old Bernard Wanjohi Kamara, was dead inside the car.

After an investigation, police said the left front tire of a 2013 Volkswagen Passat came off, crossed over the bridge for Atlantic Avenue, and the roadway before curving to the left.

According to police, the tire then crossed a median barrier into the eastbound lanes before hitting the Rav4.

Police said McKinnie was driving the Passat. He is facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing.

I-440 was closed while police investigated the crash; it has since reopened.
