(KRON) — A man is dead and a 5-year-old girl is missing after a series of large waves swept a family into the Pacific Ocean at Garrapata State Beach along Highway 1 in Monterey County at about 12:50 p.m. Friday.

An off-duty State Parks lifeguard found the family in distress near the shoreline. The man was attempting to rescue his 5-year-old daughter after she was swept away by 15 to 20-foot waves, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.

“As the father and daughter were swept into the ocean, the mother attempted to reach out to both and was also swept into the water as her husband held on to his daughter’s hand,” the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said. “She was able to get back to shore on her own. A 2-year-old child was unharmed.”

The officer was able to pull the father from the water and immediately gave him CPR. The mother and father were taken to a local hospital, where the father was pronounced dead. The mother was treated for mild hypothermia.
