77-year-old Johnston County woman with dementia and Alzheimer’s still missing

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) — A Johnston County family is holding on to hope as they search for their loved one who has been missing a week now.

The 77-year-old has dementia as well as Alzheimer’s.

According to Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Linda Airington and her husband, who also has dementia, were last seen together Friday afternoon at Murphy’s gas station in Smithfield.

Around 4:30 in the afternoon, the family got a call from Wake County authorities that they found the husband walking on I-40 and Jones Sausage Road disoriented.

He told authorities they ran out of gas and their truck was found abandoned, but Linda has not been seen since and the husband cannot remember the events that afternoon.

“We’ve tried talking to him and driving back on the pathway, trying to jog his memory and things like that. My mother-in-law was very active in different churches and they all chipped in, but unfortunately it hasn’t led us to finding her yet,” said Rich Leonard.

Linda has gray shoulder length hair, with blue eyes, and was last seen wearing a light colored hat, grey sweatpants, black under-shirt and dark tennis shoes.

Call the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office if you see her.
