HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Amid concerns about the government shutdown and looming concerns about SNAP recipients getting their full benefits from November, local governments are working to make sure people can get access to food in the meantime.
On Thursday night, Orange County commissioners voted unanimously to approve an emergency budget addition of $54,000 from their social justice fund to help community organizations provide food.
“The reason we’re doing this is because the federal government has really threatened those benefits that are offered to low-income residents,” said County Manager Travis Myren before the vote.

“At the end of October, many didn’t know if any benefits were coming,” he added.
Commissioners said it’s the right thing to do, but are also calling on Washington to take action.
“So this is really a program that is fundamental for investing in our residents,” said Commissioner Jean Hamilton. “So, I join those others in urging the executive and the congressional branches of our federal government to find a way to fully fund SNAP benefits. Also, though, given where we are, I want to extend my thanks to all who are supporting our neighbors in need.”
The funding will go to the Interfaith Council for Social Services, Orange Congregations in Mission, PORCH Chapel Hill / Carrboro, and PORCH Hillsborough.
There will also be two distribution events this Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m. at McDougle Middle School in Chapel Hill, and at 10 a.m. at the Orange County DSS parking lot at 113 Mayo St. in Hillsborough.
