Six firefighters were hurt while responding to a car fire in the Bronx when an explosion occurred, according to fire officials.
Authorities said the call came in around 7:06 p.m. for a reported car fire near 955 Westchester Ave., by Intervale Avenue and Kelly Street. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 8:19 p.m., officials said.
All six firefighters were taken to Jacobi Hospital for evaluation, according to the FDNY. Their conditions were not immediately known, authorities said.
A video posted on the Citizen app appeared to show a ball of flames lighting up the night sky, with smoke billowing as multiple fire engines responded. Another video showed a charred car and debris left behind after the fire was extinguished.
The cause of the explosion remained under investigation, officials said.
In a post on X, New York City’s Office of Emergency Management said to expect road closures, traffic delays and a heavy presence of emergency vehicles in the area of Fox Street and Westchester Avenue.
New York Congressmember Mike Lawler, who represents parts of Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties, also acknowledged the incident on social media, saying he was praying for the firefighters.
“These brave men and women put their lives on the line every day to protect New Yorkers,” he said.
This is a developing story and may be updated.
