Firefighters battle blaze at St. Johns wood recycling facility

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A two-alarm fire broke out just before 2 a.m. Monday in North Portland.

Fire crews responded to a call at 1:55 a.m. in the industrial area of the St. Johns neighborhood, where a caller reported a large pile of wood was on fire. Upon arrival, they found a large pile of pallets and wood debris was burning at Jopp Wood Recycling.

Firefighters have responded to similar calls at the site in recent years, including another two-alarm blaze in April 2024. Because of their prior knowledge of the site, crews were able to quickly set up an aerial ladder, allowing them to reach deep-seated fire within the pile.

Additional units arrived and established multiple aerial ladders to apply water to the pile and extinguish any hot spots. They also used excavators, which were already onsite and operated by the location’s employees.

No injuries were reported, but several crew members remained onsite throughout the morning to ensure the fire remained extinguished.
