Manteca daycare owner arrested following infant’s death at hospital, police say

A woman was arrested after a child stopped breathing at her Manteca daycare and later died.

MANTECA, Calif. — A woman was arrested after a child stopped breathing at her licensed daycare in Manteca, authorities said. The child, a 4-month-old boy, later died at an Oakland hospital.

According to Manteca police, officers responded to the initial call around 1:25 p.m. Wednesday along the 2300 block of Merlin Lane. 

Police arrived to find an adult on-scene providing CPR to the child, later identified as Christian Olvera. Police then administered CPR until Manteca Fire and medics took over. The child was taken to a hospital and later transferred to Oakland Children’s Hospital. He died on Oct. 24.

There were no signs of trauma, and the cause of death is pending autopsy results.

According to police, Roxanne Helus, the owner of Cherished Years Daycare, was intoxicated and arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment. She later bailed out. 

Due the child’s death, additional charges will be added including causing death to a child under 8 years old, police said.

There were reportedly four adults and three other daycare children at the scene. The other children were OK.

The investigation is ongoing, and California Community Care Licensing responded to help with the investigation. 

Helus runs Cherished Years Daycare at her home. It’s not clear how long she was in business or if she a prior history, but police said the child was watched at the daycare during the week.
