(FOX40.COM) — Thursday marked the end to ten days of terror in Roseville. The Roseville Police Department arrested the 16-year-old boy they believe is responsible for setting five cars on fire near a local Roseville park. The first blaze dates back to Oct. 13.
Soraiya and Pat Smida live with their daughters along Angus Drive.
“We’ve had nothing but wonderful memories here and this kind of kind of shakes you to the core,” Pat said.
On Wednesday, the family became the alleged arsonists’ final victims. They said it’s the stuff you think only happens in movies.
“That’s what it felt like, and it just felt like, this is the end,” Soraiya said. “This is it.”
The family recalled the scary scene. The family was getting ready for bed when they looked outside. They said they found themselves staring directly at their three-month-old Tesla up in flames.
“I came to the window and saw a dark figure,” Soraiya Smida said. “I saw flames, and it just was, mayhem after that.”
It’s also been a frightening couple of weeks for Anthony Savio. Having just moved back to Roseville from Los Angeles, he said he expected quiet and safety, but instead witnessed two vehicles quote exploding right outside his home — including his own car. The man showed FOX40 scattered shears of metal — all that was left of Savio’s BMW.
“I worked really hard to get that car,” Savio said. “And I don’t have insurance right now.”
Several victims told FOX40 this experience sparked memories they will never forget, but wish they could.
“I saw fire, I’m thinking my children’s children are inside,” the Smida’s said. “What are we going to do? How can I protect them? “So many crazy things went through my head and it just was sheer terror. I was beyond scared.”
The Roseville Police Department confirmed detectives found evidence connecting the now-arrested Roseville 16-year-old to the fires. Officials have not released a motive yet, but neighbors showed FOX40 cryptic messaging found near a couple of the scenes.
“He had time to scribble that little message over there,” Pat said before showing FOX40 the ash-engraved writing on the pavement next to his home.
“I hope he feels bad for his actions because he ruined some people’s lives,” Pat Smida said.
According to the Roseville Police Department, the teenager is in custody at Placer County Juvenile Hall. Each victim FOX40 spoke with said they hope justice is served.
