The Montgomery County Police Department says they are looking for a new launch site.
SILVER SPRING, Md. — Montgomery County Police has paused its Drone as First Responder (DFR) operations in downtown Silver Spring. The police department says the pause is necessary due to nearby construction at the current drone launch site.
The department is actively working to identify a new launch location to ensure the continued delivery of DFR services to the downtown community.
While the downtown Silver Spring operations are on hold, all the DFR equipment and personnel will be temporarily reassigned to support operations in White Oak.
“The department remains fully committed to the DFR program and its mission to enhance public safety. We appreciate the community’s understanding during this transition and will share updates as they become available,” the department said in a press release.
The DFR program was first launched in November 2023. It uses unmanned aircraft systems (drones) to respond to 911 calls for service, often arriving before or alongside patrol officers. The live video feed provided by the drone helps officers assess the situation and develop an appropriate response.
