The Planetary Diet – For health or climate? – Diet and Health Today

In Summary

* The original EAT Lancet diet was published in The Lancet in January 2019. A revised version (called the Planetary Health Diet) was published in October 2025.

* I analysed the nutritional content of the Planetary Health Diet (PHD) in both publications. There are many serious deficiencies in vital nutrients.

* Both reports are anti-meat and anti-ruminant.

* Following the 2019 publication, a Professor in California entered into communications with the EAT science director. The EAT science director stated categorically that the meat consumption limits were set “solely in light of health recommendations” i.e., not for climate reasons.

* The 2025 report restated this position “The PHD is based entirely on the direct effects of different diets on human health, not on environmental criteria.”

* That didn’t stop the 2025 report attacking ruminants for both health and climate reasons and calling for substantial reductions in meat and dairy production.

* The 2025 report claimed that adopting the Planetary Health Diet “could avert approximately 15 million deaths per year (27% of total deaths worldwide).” In this note I unpack how those numbers were created.

* This note also shares some of the demands/wish lists of the recent report and starts to put this in the context of a bigger agenda going on.

Introduction

Last week we reviewed the nutritional deficiencies in the revised EAT Lancet diet, now called the Planetary Health Diet (Ref 1). I reflected on this note after writing it. I wondered if the reiterated nutritional deficiencies could be attributed to ignorance or malfeasance. Do the authors not know about plant vs animal sources of nutrients, or do they not care? I don’t know the answer to that. What I do know is that the latest report has an agenda and it is part of a much bigger agenda. This week we’re going to look at the agenda. Next week we are going to look at the much bigger agenda. The agenda is anti-meat and anti-ruminant. The much bigger agenda is quite eye opening.
