SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento neighborhoods could soon get a little bumpier. The City Council has approved 90 new speed lumps across 24 streets to slow drivers and reduce crashes, costing just over half a million dollars.
Four of the streets are in North Natomas. Club Center Drive, between both ends of Danbrook Way, will get seven speed lumps. Councilmember Lisa Kaplan said the area’s crashes hit close to home.
“Club Center is one of those locations of which many people know we lost two grandpas last year and a teacher was hit and severely injured.” Kaplan said.
Kaplan noted that while speed lumps won’t solve every problem, placing them close together encourages drivers to pause and slow down.
In Oak Park, 16th Avenue between Martin Luther King Boulevard and 32nd Street will also get speed lumps. Councilmember Caity Maple toured the street herself.
“About three houses just in my line of sight that were under active construction because cars had driven into the houses. We said, okay, there is a real problem here.” Maple said.
Maple added that speed lumps are a small measure but can make a big difference for families.
“Pedestrian safety is a big issue for me and many others on this council. We fight for that. We know that Sacramento can be a really unsafe place for people. And so this is just one step in the right direction,” said Maple.

“One death is one death too many.” Gonzalez said. “There are things we can do today to change the built environment and get safer driving behaviors, such as quick builds.”
Quick builds allow the city to skip parts of the planning process so projects are completed faster. Officials say this approach will help prevent traffic deaths.
Councilmember Eric Guerra emphasized that speeding often comes from local neighbors.
“I think that is the thing we also need to call out in this effort, it is our neighbors many of the times who are the ones who are speeding. Parents after they drop off their kids, forget that there are other kids being dropped off at the same time.” Guerra said. “We cannot do every speed lump everywhere, but the ones that we have prioritized are the area where the citizens and voters have said, we absolutely want them.”
Speed lumps are approved through the city’s Public Works Department, which reviews community applications and maintains a backlog due to limited annual installations per district. Construction is expected to start Fall of this year, with funds coming from the Vision Zero safety program.
