(KRON) — Embattled San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus was removed from office Tuesday, following a unanimous vote from the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors at a special public meeting.
The board’s decision took effect immediately.
Corpus’ tenure as sheriff has been marred by scandals, most notably accusations that she had a romantic relationship with her former chief of staff, Victor Aenlle. Additionally, Corpus, who was elected sheriff in 2022, has been accused by a civil grand jury of misconduct and retaliations against staff members, including firings, transfers, and even an arrest.

Amid calls to resign, Corpus had remained defiant. However, earlier this month, retired Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James Emerson submitted a 42-page advisory report finding that four independent bases for removing Corpus from office were supported by evidence.
Any decision regarding removing Corpus from office would have required four-fifths vote from the board. In Tuesday’s vote, all five board members voted to remove her from office.
Following Tuesday’s vote, the San Mateo County Deputy’s Association issued a statement, saying it was “pleased” with the results of the vote.
