The event took place in Railhead Park in Auburn, where many mental health resources were tabled to give attendees a chance to learn about what’s available.

According to the AFSP OOTD website, over 200 people signed up to participate in this year’s walk, with 31 teams signed up. This community event raised over $22,000, a large portion will go back to Placer County to plan for next year’s walk.

Christian Cuoto, board member for the Greater Sacramento Chapter, was this year’s “walk chair.” He said he was proud of his team and Placer County as a whole.

“Today our community showed up and rallied to support mental health and suicide. Although times have been dark in our county as of late, our friends, families and neighbors stood together in the light,” Cuoto said. “Today we came together and raised almost $25,000! Thank you all for coming out and supporting us.”

Before the walk started, community members had the chance to walk around and see some of the resources that came out, such as:

  • Sierra Native Alliance
  • Placerville LGBTQ+ Center
  • Branches Outpatient
  • Auburn-Davis DBT
  • Auburn Hip-Hop Congress
  • Auburn Police Department
  • Placer County Sheriff’s Office

Lauren Pulido, Area Director for the Greater Sacramento and Central Valley Chapter, told FOX40.COM that today, Placer County took a brave step to create space for suicide awareness.

“Today our community in Placer County took a brave and courageous step to create space for suicide awareness and to bring hope to those affected by suicide. With over 200 people present, our out of the darkness walk continues to make a lasting impact on all those involved and symbolizes the reason behind our mission, our communities,” Pulido said. “We raised over $22,000 for research, education, and advocacy around suicide prevention, and our work is not done yet.”

The next Out of the Darkness Walk takes place at the State Capitol on Oct. 25, starting at 9 a.m. in the West Steps. For more information, click here.
