(FOX40.COM) — A Carmichael woman is hoping someone will come forward and return her mother’s ashes after they were stolen from a vehicle in her apartment complex.
The theft happened overnight between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. as the ashes were being delivered from out of state by the woman’s brother. The family said they were preparing for another relative’s memorial service when they discovered the ashes were missing.
According to the family, the ashes were inside a brown box taken along with other items from the vehicle. But they’re not interested in getting anything else back, just the ashes.
Since the theft, they’ve posted signs throughout the Carmichael area, talked to local businesses, and filed a report with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Nearly a month later, they’re still holding out hope that someone will do the right thing.
“I hadn’t seen my mom in years before she passed away. I’d been waiting so long for my brother to bring me her ashes, and when he finally did, I didn’t even get to touch the box before it disappeared. I don’t care about anything else. I just want them to return my mom’s ashes. That’s it. They don’t even have to knock on my door,” Jennifer Montoya said.
The family is asking anyone who might know where the ashes are to come forward or anonymously return them, no questions asked.
