Child on bicycle struck and killed by school bus driver in Aspen Hill

A school bus struck and killed a child on a bicycle in Aspen Hill, prompting road closures for investigation, police say.

ASPEN HILL, Md. — A child riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a school bus at the intersection of Bauer Drive and Russet Road on Thursday.

Montgomery County police responded to the scene at 3:12 p.m. When they arrived, officers found a girl, 11, had been struck by a school bus driver, according to police.

The school bus and the victim were both coming from Earle B Wood Middle School.

There were children on board the bus at the time of the crash who witnessed the accident. The children on board called 911. No one on the bus was injured, police say.

It is unclear how many children were on board the bus. They have all since been reunited with their parents. All kids are being offered counseling sessions with DHHS.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the crash to determine what direction the bus was heading and how the child was struck.

According to Montgomery County emergency officials, Bauer Drive is closed between Greenspan Lane and Myer Terrace while police investigate. Russett Road is closed at Manorvale Road.

As the reconstruction unit continues to investigate, it is unclear how long the roads will remain closed.

Officers with Montgomery County are asking drivers to avoid the area.

No charges will be filed against the bus driver until the investigation is completed. The investigation is expected to take between several weeks and a couple of months.

Thomas Taylor, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent, spoke during a press conference.

“This is heartbreaking for our school system and our community,” he said.
