Vigil honors five lives lost in tragic house fire

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The community came out in large numbers Tuesday night to support the family who lost their children and loved ones in a fire at 23 Twiller St.  Over 100 people showed up to the candlelight vigil and memorial on the sidewalk in front of the home.

“As we light these candles, we do so for each life that was taken from us too soon. Each flame represents love. Love that endures beyond this life. We do so not only in remembrance but in hope. Hope that the light shines in the darkness,” said Deacon Paul of Saint John’s Episcopal in Troy.

He led the vigil, and many joined him in prayer as they lit their candles in memory and support. “Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil…” the crowd recited the Lord’s prayer together.

The sound of the community singing in perfect unison, filled the night air as they sang, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.  Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”

The grieving mother, who had just lost her children and loved ones in the fire, fought back tears and thanked all those who came out that night. “You guys, I have to say, I am so, thankful for each and every one of you people that have came out an paid your respects to my family. I love you all. We are all a family in this place.”

Albany Fire Chief Joseph Gregory said he has not seen a devastating fire like this where this many lives were taken at once. “Our members did a phenomenal job. They got to the scene. They made the right calls. They did everything they could. This was just a tragic situation.”

He said that the firefighter who was hurt during the fire suffered minor injuries, but the chief said in cases like this, all his firefighters struggle with the terrible loss. “And this stuff happens. And we know that. And, you know, but it’s not supposed to happen to us. That’s what everybody thinks. And this time it did.”

The chief reminded people, “Ironically, this is the beginning of Fire Prevention Week. We urge people to make sure that to pay attention, make sure that their smoke alarms are operational, the CO detectors are operational, have an escape plan.”

The home is set to be taken down Wednesday morning, and the investigation into a cause remains ongoing.
