PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man made his first federal court appearance on Friday, accused of kicking a federal officer after attempting to escape his arrest earlier in October, authorities announced.
Officials said 28-year-old Ezequiel Ramos Hernandez was charged with multiple felony crimes, including assaulting federal agents and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.
According to court documents, the FBI, along with the Woodburn and Salem police departments, executed a search warrant at Ramos Hernandez’s hotel in Woodburn on October 1.
Agents seized “distributable quantities” of cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine from the hotel room and arrested Ramos Hernandez.
While authorities drove Ramos Hernandez to lodge him for federal drug distribution charges, he “managed to escape from the moving vehicle while handcuffed,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon said.
Two FBI agents chased Ramos Hernandez, who resisted arrest and kicked one of the FBI agents in the face multiple times, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
The FBI agents were eventually able to subdue Ramos Hernandez with help from civilian witnesses, authorities said.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ramos Hernandez later told an FBI agent that he tried to escape out of fear of being deported.
Following Ramos-Hernandez’s initial court appearance on Friday, he was detained pending further court proceedings.
Officials note that assaulting a federal officer is punishable by up to eight years in federal prison.
