Lockdown at South Carolina State University after two Saturday night shootings, one deadly

A woman was killed and a man is in the hospital after separate shootings at South Carolina State University on Saturday night, WCNC Charlotte reports.

Shots were fired Saturday night in the area of Hugine Suites, a student residence, according to a campus alert. The university said a female guest was wounded and taken to an area hospital, where she died.

In the second shooting, a male guest was shot. He was flown to a hospital for treatment.

The university confirmed the shootings were separate in another update.

On Sunday morning, the campus was still on lockdown, only accessible to students, employees and investigators.

As of 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, a pop-up message on the unviersity website reads:

“SCSU Alert: The South Carolina State University campus is on lockdown following a shooting. .All Homecoming events scheduled for Sunday have been canceled. If you are not a current student, please do not attempt to come to campus. Public Safety has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate. Hugine Suites residents who are not in the complex report to SHM. Anyone in Hugine Suites stay put. Students in other residence halls return to your rooms. Off-campus residents, please exit the campus.”
