(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento County announced on Friday the closure of the Department of Human Assistance’s office on 28th Street.

The county said its lease on the building expires at the end of the year, but that DHA requested a six-month lease extension to June 30, 2026, to give customers and staff ample time to prepare for the building’s closure. Services at the site will wind down by mid-year, and staff will begin to relocate in the spring of 2026.
According to the county, the 28th Street building costs nearly $5 million annually due to its lease and security.
House Resolution 1, commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, would “significantly reduce social service funding” in the future, the county said. The county decided to close the office and focus resources on staff and essential services.
According to the county, no layoff decisions have been made.
As most services don’t require in-person visits, customers can handle applications and case updates by phone at 800-560-0976 or online. DHA also noted that documents can be submitted electronically.
