NCDMV gives private driver education schools chance to conduct road tests

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is attempting to make road tests more accessible for teen drivers.

The NCDMV announced they are certifying private driver education schools to conduct road tests. According to the NCDMV, the road tests conducted will be for teens wanting their Level 2 Limited Provisional License.

The NCDMV said this new initiative will give teens with a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit the chance to take a road test before having to go to a NCDMV office.

According to the NCDMV, the goal of this new initiative is to reduce wait times at NCDMV driver license offices and provide better flexibility for families. The NCDMV said teens can take their road test at an NCDMV office if they would like to.

The NCDMV said teens who take and pass a road test at a certified private driver education school will only need to visit an NCDMV office to purchase and receive their Level 2 Limited Provisional License.

“By outsourcing some road tests to certified private driver education schools, we’re providing more options for teens and their families while increasing efficiency at our driver license offices,” said NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine. “This allows our driver license examiners to focus on in-office services, streamlining the process for everyone.”

According to the NCDMV, the cost of the road tests will be set by each individual driver education school.
