In November, the state will elect its next governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general, as well as its House of Delegates.
ANNANDALE, Va. — Northern Virginia residents were over 495 Sunday afternoon with a message to get out and vote early in this November’s election.
Virginia will elect its next governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general, as well as its House of Delegates.
“We all have to chime in and keep our democracy,” said Marianne Burke, who is with Virginia Grassroots.
She organized this rally to remind people to get to the polls.
“We really have a lot of power if we just get people organized in order to do it,” said Burke.
Others showed up to spend their Sunday spreading the same message.
“We have to have everybody voting, and I mean everybody, because if we don’t vote, we really don’t have any say. For everybody who is like, ‘oh, it doesn’t matter,’ and they give up, well, if you don’t vote, what are you doing? It’s one of the few things that we have complete agency over,” said Northern Virginia resident Janet Martin.
According to the Virginia Department of Elections, during the 2024 general election, Virginia had a 70% voter turnout.
But, in the last gubernatorial election in 2021, Virginia saw just under 55% of voters head to the polls.
“It’s hard to criticize something without being hypocritical if you didn’t vote,” said Springfield resident Peter Fontneau.
“We are paying attention,” said Burke. “We are awake, we are aware, and voting is one way we can show them that.”
Virginians can register to vote until Oct. 24.
Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
