Residents across the Sacramento region spotted mysterious lights in the sky Thursday night.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Some residents in the Sacramento region reported seeing lights in the sky on Thursday night.
Some Sacramento-area residents reported seeing mysterious lights in sky Thursday night.
Videos sent to ABC10 show a streak of lights moving across the atmosphere. People sent videos from Fairfield and all the way to Citrus Heights.
While there’s no official confirmation on what the lights were, ABC10 checked in with Chief Meteorologist Monica Woods for insight.
“This could be space debris, a meteor breaking apart or a rocket launch,” Woods said. “Oddly, SpaceX scheduled a launch of its Falcon 9 rocket out of Vandenberg Space Force Base on Thursday evening. The launch time showed liftoff just before 9:27 p.m. PT, which wouldn’t align with the timing of these videos. So, it’s more likely space debris. Although, it looks like there is more of a liftoff phase in some of the videos, so it is curious to me how the light arcs up and then falls apart.”
Woods said she watched the live launch and followed the online chat.
“The farthest north people reported seeing it was around Chowchilla,” she said. “There was also a faint glow just south of San Jose.”
