DENVER (KDVR) — How many FOX31 team members does it take to free a baby squirrel?
Four, apparently.
Typically, the journalists head out of the FOX31 building to track down the news, but on Friday night, a baby squirrel decided to make the news from inside the station.
Security cameras captured a rogue baby squirrel running through the hallways near the station’s parking garage, with journalists Greg Nieto and Nate Belt, accompanied by photojournalist Mike Roberts in tow.
The three attempted to usher the squirrel to the exit, but it led them on a wild squirrel chase.
It darted around the point where two hallways intersected, moving side to side, looking like something straight out of a “Scooby Doo” monster chase scene.
There’s one particularly funny part, where Belt has his back turned to the intersection, and the squirrel somehow managed to sneak behind him, leaving his face in a complete state of confusion. That moment led to another developing detail, showing that the three-person crew had now expanded to four.
Another photojournalist, Andrea Vasquez, had joined the effort, and she brought the heavy artillery.
She armed herself with something like a broom pole and used it to shoo away the squirrel. Her efforts proved pivotal as the squirrel finally saw its chance to escape, and hightailed it to the open door.
Knowing that the security camera probably picked up all of that, the crew turned to it and raised their arms in celebration, with high-fives all around.
FOX31, better be careful, despite their immense talent in covering the news, this group definitely has a future in squirrel wrangling. Even Colorado Parks and Wildlife said so, with a reply post to Nieto on X saying “Good form!”
