Huy Nguyen faces up to 40 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend, Alison “Kate” LaPorta.
FAIRFAX, Va. — A Lorton man faces decades in prison after he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend in April 2024.
According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, a jury found 48-year-old Huy Tien “Max” Nguyen guilty of second-degree murder for killing 38-year-old Alison “Kate” LaPorta.
Nguyen had been dating LaPorta for a year when he drove her to Mount Vernon Hospital on April 17, 2024, for gunshot injuries. She was later transferred to Fairfax Hospital, where she died.
Nguyen claimed LaPorta had shot herself with his gun; however, evidence such as the trajectory of the bullet and a photo of the gun’s imprint on LaPorta’s seatbelt showed Nguyen had actually pulled the trigger while sitting in her car.
“Kate should still be with us today,” said Descano. “Max Nguyen’s needless actions stole a daughter from her parents and a mother from her children. I’m relieved that his attempts to lie about what happened to Kate did not allow him to escape accountability. I hope that this conviction can bring some measure of closure to Kate’s family.”
Nguyen is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 13, 2026. He faces up to 40 years in prison for the second-degree murder charge and three years for the firearm charge.
