Sep. 22—CLEARWATER COUNTY — A 26-year-old man has been pronounced dead and a Bagley man has been charged with second-degree murder following an assault on Saturday night.
According to a release from Clearwater County Sheriff Darin Halverson, at 12:48 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, dispatch received a call of a man who was not breathing at a Bagley residence.
At the scene, law enforcement discovered the victim, later identified as 26-year-old Tray McCollum, lying on the ground near the residence, according to the criminal complaint. One of the responding officers noted that 24-year-old Christyan Logan was also at the residence.
Lifesaving measures were started and McCollum was transported to the Sanford Bagley Medical Center. At approximately 1:35 a.m., he was pronounced dead.
Medical staff alerted law enforcement that there were signs of trauma on McCollum’s head, “consistent with an assault or extreme force,” the release said.
While at the Sanford Bagley Emergency Room, a witness provided a formal statement to law enforcement.
During his statement, the witness told investigators that he had been ricing in Lower Rice Lake with McCollum and Logan on Saturday, Sept. 20. He reported that they left to purchase alcohol and then returned to the Lower Rice Lake area in a vehicle.
The witness reported that Logan had exited the vehicle and began assaulting him. He stated that he ran into the woods and when he looked back, Logan and McCollum were “fighting each other,” the complaint noted.
Following the incident, the witness stated that McCollum “was not breathing and was turning blue,” the complaint said.
Logan was arrested in Fosston and booked into the Clearwater County Jail on charges of second-degree murder.
An autopsy is scheduled for McCollum at the University of North Dakota Forensic Pathology Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension crime scene team was called in to assist in the investigation. No further details will be released at this time, the release said.
