WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WGN) — A former Waukegan police officer facing second-degree murder charges in connection with a 2020 shooting was in court Monday for trial proceedings on an unrelated battery case.
Daunte Salinas is accused of battering a Waukegan man in 2019. The second-degree murder charge stems from the shooting death of 19-year-old Marcellis Stinette, who was fatally shot after Salinas tried to arrest him.
The tragic incident was captured on body cam and dash cam video.
No date has been set yet for the Salinas second-degree murder trial.
Waukegan police would later relieve Salinas of his duties.
If he’s found guilty on the battery counts, it could land Salinas in jail for up to 13 years.
Amid Monday’s court proceedings, the battery victim and his wife testified about what they say was an excessive and unnecessary use of force.
