(FOX40.COM) — One concerned resident is grappling with the aftermath of a frightening incident that occurred at her Natomas apartment complex on Sept. 13.

The Sacramento Police Department confirmed no one was injured, but some residents have lingering questions and concerns about their safety.

Laura Marie and her dog Madison were enjoying a warm Sacramento evening this past Saturday, Sept. 13, until around 12:30 p.m., when silence turned to chaos.

“…What I thought was fireworks turned into a hail of gunfire,” Laura Marie told Fox40.

The Sacramento Police Department confirmed that a house party at Villagio Apartments went sour when a fight broke out.

“All of a sudden, I just hear a bunch of popping go off,” another resident — Jeffrey Leslie — told Fox40.

A group of men also charged past Laura Marie’s home.

“They ran past there screaming, using various epitaphs, saying how they needed to get out of here quickly,” Laura Marie recalled. “They exited the gate, which is maybe 50ft from my bedroom window.”

The concerned resident noticed shell casings scattered across the complex’s parking lot, a heavy police presence and noticeable damage to walls and cars nearby. She told Fox40 that the gates just give the illusion of safety and that she is frustrated with Villagio Apartments for what she described as their ‘lack of transparency’ surrounding the incident.

“I think management needs to step up and ensure our safety,” Laura Marie said. “I mean, there’s bullet holes in the stucco. There [are] bullet holes in cars, other cars are grazed by ricochet bullets. I mean, I feel very unsafe. And they’re not doing anything to make me feel safer.”

Fox40 reached out to the complex for a statement, but our team did not receive a response. A representative from the leasing office told Fox40 that they are not able to comment, but they did say they have since implemented a standing guard — 24/7 security.

“We did see one car parked in front of the complex,” Laura Marie said. “I walk the dog numerous times all day and at night. And I specifically went out twice last night after dark. And I have not seen security.”

Leslie added, “It would be nice to have a bit more of a presence, but at the same time, there’s not really much I think that could have helped mitigate that specific situation,” Leslie explained. “I guess I should just be happy that it didn’t turn out worse.”

The Sacramento Police Department is investigating this incident, but it told Fox40 there are no suspect details at this time.
