TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A new mural was unveiled in downtown Troy on Wednesday. The three-story work sits at the entrance of the city on the side of 400 River Street.
Painted by Wisconsin-based artist Greg Gossel, the mural aims to celebrate Troy’s rich history, culture and spirit. The muralist said he drew inspiration from the city’s historical fires, revitalization, architecture and deep ties to boxing.
“This piece is about resilience, with everything converging to a central point, much like how Troy has risen time and again,” Gossel said. “The bridges, the wildlife, the industrial symbols — they all tie into the energy of this place.”
A boxer stands in the center of the mural in front of a red and orange sunset, with his arms outstretched, the year of Troy’s incorporation as a town scribed on his arm and a Troy hat on his head. The figure is surrounded by easily recognizable Troy elements, including the Hudson riverfront, Green Island Bridge and the Troy-Waterford Bridge, as well as a water wheel, a crow roost and a red poppy honoring local veterans.
“This bold new mural at one of Troy’s busiest gateways is so much more than public art — it’s a powerful tribute to our city’s unity, strength, and resilience,” said Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello.
Gossel, who has painted murals in Milkwaukee and elswhere, finished the mural in four days. The art project was funded by the State of New York’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative and produced by the Arts Center of the Capital Region.
