(FOX40.COM) — On Sunday afternoon, a quiet Elk Grove neighborhood filled with flashing lights, sirens, and the sound of honking horns not for an emergency, but to celebrate a brave 10-year-old boy named Andrew.
Andrew recently finished his battle with cancer and is now officially cancer-free. To honor his journey, a family friend reached out to the California Highway Patrol with an idea: a surprise procession to show Andrew just how many people were cheering him on.
CHP quickly jumped in, joined by Elk Grove Police, Cosumnes Fire District, local motorcycle enthusiasts, an exotic car club, and even Andrew’s basketball team that he hasn’t been able to play with for months.
“It was overwhelming,” CHP lieutenant Brandon Baldwin said. “This is the true definition of community everybody coming together for one cause, to support and uplift a family that has been hurting and is now entering the next chapter.”
For Andrew’s parents, the celebration was more than just a parade.
“This is a huge part of his healing process,” his mother, Marissa, said. “It’s been very overwhelming, very humbling that there’s so much support around us, because cancer can be a very isolating experience.”
His father, Josh, echoed the same sentiment. “I think it just goes to show that community still matters,” he said. “People still love and care about each other, and this proves it.”
A family friend named Brian helped coordinate the effort, calling the day “something none of us will ever forget.”
“To see his face, the excitement… it’s got to feel good that he’s cancer-free, but also to know he has all this support,” Brian said. “I’ll never forget it either.”
And then there was Andrew himself, smiling shyly as cars and first responders paraded by. When asked what his favorite part was, his answer was simple: “My team coming out of the car.”
The celebration ended with hugs, tears, and cheers a powerful reminder that even after the hardest battles, love and community can shine the brightest.
