The 23-year-old was shot and killed a week before his birthday and day before his brother’s birthday.
WASHINGTON — More than two years after 23-year-old Brandon Gant was shot and killed in Southeast D.C., his family is still searching for answers — and justice.
Gant was fatally shot in April 2023 at the intersection of 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue SE, just one week before his birthday. His mother, Toloria Gant, says she’s still heartbroken and desperate for closure.
“I’m just broken — to know that I’ll never be able to see my son again,” Gant said in an interview with WUSA9.
Each month, she does a community walk, hoping to raise awareness and urge someone to come forward with information.
“He was the sweetest young man you could ever meet,” she said. “He was loving and caring.”
Police said they found Gant shot inside a vehicle after responding to the scene in 2023. His mother insists he was not involved in criminal activity and was simply running errands for her at the time, including stopping for gas.
“They ambushed him, and I feel like that’s unacceptable,” she said. “You can’t just be shooting up a moving car because of what you think.”
Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made. Gant is calling on everyone — from local authorities to federal officials — for help.
“I just need help, whether it’s coming from the president, the U.S. District Attorney, MPD, anybody,” she said. “I don’t want you to just make an arrest. I want them indicted and charged for my son’s murder.”
She also urged members of the community to speak up.
“I know someone saw something. I know someone knows something,” she said. “It’s just a matter of time before someone comes forward.”
A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact D.C. police. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
